Building an Emergency Cushion Before Anything Else

Investing, paying extra on debt and saving for goals all go better once there is a buffer between you and the next unexpected bill.

What the cushion is for

An emergency fund is money set aside for things that cannot be planned: a broken boiler, a medical cost, a gap between jobs. Its purpose is to stop a bad week from turning into new debt.

How much

There is no universal figure. Guides commonly express it as a number of months of essential spending, and the right number depends on how stable your income is, whether anyone depends on you and what else you could fall back on. Start with a small first target, such as one month of essentials, and grow it.

Where to keep it

  • Somewhere you can reach within a day or two.
  • Separate from your everyday account, so it is not spent by accident.
  • Not in anything whose value can fall sharply just when you need it.

Why not a volatile asset

Emergencies arrive at random times. If the cushion is held in something that swings in price, including most cryptocurrencies, you may be forced to sell at a bad moment. Keep the cushion boring.

Refill after use

Using the fund is the point of having it. Once the emergency is over, make refilling it the first item in the next budget.
